Spring studies, fitness and diet update

10149024_10153939521565338_1575019062_oI thought I’d do I quick round up of what I’ve been up to lately. Spring is here and I’ve been changing up my routine for the better; eating differently, incorporating new workouts and doing some exciting career stuff too. Here’s the scoop….

After falling in love with the world of fitness a few years ago, I decided I wanted to work in the industry myself and signed up to do the Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification required to work in any gym. I started training in the middle of February (read a more detailed overview here) and attended training over 5 weekends followed by a practical assessment last Sunday. I am incredibly excited to say that I PASSED all the written and practical elements and I am now a fully qualified gym instructor! There are lots more exciting training courses which I would love to do, such as nutrition, exercise to music and branded fitness classes like Insanity and Les Mills. At the moment I am trying to get as much experience as possible and hope to find a job and develop my skills further. I would really appreciate it if anyone had any advice to share in this area?

I started a Whole 9 plan in February but after 2 weeks I was struggling to lose any weight which I found frustrating considering how strict the plan is. I have no problem living without dairy, grains, sugar or alcohol but it makes life a little repetitive (chicken and broccoli anyone?) so I decided to explore my alternatives. I ordered a book on ‘carb cycling’ without really knowing what to expect. Obviously the idea of eating carbs was appealing, and after cutting them out of my diet on and off for the past 9 years I knew they would be a welcome return to my plate. I’ve been following Chris Powell’s ‘7-day carb cycle solution’ for 3 weeks now and I have lost 6 pounds so far. This might not sound impressive to anyone looking for drastic weight loss, but having lost about 3 stone in the past 6 years I am now stuck in that infamously tough ‘last 10 pounds’ phase where weight loss seemed to have ground to a halt. I had definitely reached a plateau, but now I am losing again (whilst eating CARBS!) and I couldn’t be happier. If you would like a more detailed post on my carb cycling experience please let me know in the comments section below.

As I mentioned, my weight loss has been in a plateau for 6-12 months and I felt my fitness routine needed a shake up. I was attending 5-6 classes a week and working my ass off but nothing was happening. After a few weeks of studying and learning the ins and outs of gym instructing, I realised that I was exercising without a clear plan. Doh! I had been doing the same level of intensity for a year or so without any adaptations and so my body had just got used to training at that level. I had to bite the bullet and realise that the only way I was going to meet my goals was by ditching fitness classes and instead doing workouts at the gym. For about 6 weeks now I have been doing 3 weights sessions a week combined with interval training and a few Metafit sessions thrown in for good measure. OK I couldn’t give up fitness classes just yet! I have seen an improvement in my arms, shoulders and back and of course I have lost a bit of weight too. Happy days!
